Prognosis of Acute Leukemia in Infancy

Abstract

|
Pretreatment characteristics of 18 infants with acute leukemia were studied in relation to "early death" and their related factors. During the first week of diagnosis 9 infants died despite the general improvement in overall survival. The most important prognostic factor was the initial peripheral leukocyte count: patients with a leukocyte count of 100, 000/μl or higher was associated with early deaths. The patients in neonatal period and/or early infancy also had a high early death rate.
